The Fall Seasonal Value Pack

As days get shorter and nights get cooler, wine choices start to lean towards rounder styles. There is still plenty of time for outdoor dining and fire-pit gatherings, and, as we live in New England, we should always expect a burst of summer to take us by surprise even in November. With this in mind we need wine selections to be versatile and pair with food menus that straddle the changing season. This year’s Fall Explorers’ Pack is up to the challenge and is equally divided between whites and reds.

This pack contains three white wines: a light-bodied, off-dry Riesling from Germany; a round and fresh Vermentino from Sardinia, Italy; a medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc that will give French SB a run for its money and hails from South Africa.

There are also three red wines: a juicy Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley in France that can be chilled or not; a Pinot Noir from Chile that breaks the mold of Chilean reds and offers something more lithe and food friendly; and from Spain a classic styling of Crianza Rioja.

While some folks have had these grapes or wines from these places before, others have not, or maybe these particular bottles are new to you. This is the point of the Explorers' Packs: to try something you haven't had before - whether it is a wine you are completely unfamiliar with or whether the wine is a from a familiar grape or place but perhaps from an unfamiliar wine-maker; these packs aim to offer something different.

	Seehof 2024 Riesling Kabinett Rheinhessen “Elektrisch” 100% Riesling. Apple, peach, lime, a whiff of honey, and wet stones. An off-dry and scintillating bottle of Riesling that refreshes the palate. Pretty fruit on the palate with stoney mineral aspect. Sip by itself, or serve with appetizers, pâté, duck, roast pork or wedge of "Swiss style" cheese like Challerhocker.
	Atzei Saragat 2024 IGT Isola dei Nuraghi Vermentino 100% Vermentino. Lemon peel, nectarine, light floral impression, and a hint of saline. This medium-bodied white from Sardinia has a nice freshness but is round and has moderate acidity. A pleasant viscosity and medium long finish makes this a delightful alternative to more familiar grape varieties. Pare with chicken and fish dishes, or chunks of pecorino.
	Southern Right 2024 Cape Coast Sauvignon Blanc 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Grapefruit, citrus, lemon peel, grass, and herbs. Zippy, but with a round mid-palate, and a long finish that brings out tropical fruit notes. A lovely effort from South Africa that compares vary favorably to Sauvignon Blanc from more well-known regions around the globe.
	Pépière 2023 VdP Cabernet Franc “La Pépiè” 100% Cabernet Franc. Red currants, pomegranate, green pepper, savory herbs, earthy, and a whiff of barnyard. Bright and crunchy fruits, with light- to medium-bodied weight in the mouth. Lively and full of character, you can drink this chilled or not, it's up to you. Pair with burgers, lamb sausage, twice baked potatoes, or an aged goat button. Organic.
	Clos Des Fous 2023 Pinot Noir “Subsollum” 100% Pinot Noir. Raspberries, tart cherries, subtle strawberries, tumbled stones, mushroom earthiness, and light scent of flowers. Very precise and minerally driven Pinot from Chile. Medium-bodied with bright acidity that gives the wine energy and makes it perfectly suitable for a plethora of food pairings. Try with salmon, pasta with herb or cream sauces, pork loin with fig sauce, portobello and roquefort, and, of course, roast chicken.
	Torres 2021 Rioja Crianza Altos Ibéricos 100% Tempranillo. Red and black fruits with rasberry jam and vanilla spice. This is your classic Crianza (aged for at least one year in oak, and one year in bottle) with the oak playing its part as a central character along with good fruit lifting it all up in the background. Nothing flashy here, just a good solid Rioja that is very satisfying and delicious.
