Explorers' Seasonal Value Pack: Autumn - Fall Into a New Groove

Great Wines Don't Have to be Expensive!

The Fall Seasonal Value Pack

As days get shorter and nights get cooler, wine choices start to lean towards rounder and fuller styles. There is still plenty of time for outdoor dining and fire-pit gatherings, and, as we live in New England, we should always expect a burst of summer to take us by surprise even in November. With this in mind we need wine selections to be versatile and pair with food menus that straddle the changing seasons. This year’s Fall Explorers’ Pack is up to the challenge and is equally divided between whites and reds.

This pack contains a medium to light white blend from Austria; a round but lively Pecorino from Italy; a medium-plus-bodied white made from Chenin Blanc that is balanced with zesty acidity and hales from South Africa; a juicy three season red from France that is made from 100% Cabernet Franc; a Spanish single varietal red from Galicia made from a grape (Sousón) that nearly no one has heard of; and from Chile an old Bordeaux grape that doesn't get much use in that region anymore, let alone bottled as a single variety.

While some folks have had these grapes, or wines from these places before, others have not, or maybe these particular bottles are new to you. This is the point of the Explorers' Packs: to try something you haven't had before - whether it is something you've never heard of, or something from a familiar style or place, but from a wine-maker that is new to you.

This Explorers' Pack is discounted a bit more than 15% off regular prices. No further discounts apply.

Meinklang 2023 Burgenland White Osterreich

50% Grüner Veltiner, 40% Welschriesling and 10% Muscat. Peaches, tangerine, apples, flowers, and spice. Very aromatic and enticing nose. The body is light and bright with a crisp with a clean moderate finish. A very versatile white, suitable for appetizers, curries, chicken and pork dishes, and vegetarian meals. Organic.

Gran Sasso 2022 Terre Di Chieti IGP Pecorino

100% Pecorino. Pear, melon, apple, toasted almonds, with floral and light spice. Medium-bodied with a tangy acidity that keeps it fresh on the palate. The finish is medium length and dry. For those who love un-oaked Chardonnay, this will be a satisfying alternative. Pair with shrimp scampi, chicken, and fish.

A. A. Badenhorst 2022 Secateurs Chenin Blanc

100% Chenin Blanc. Apples, lemon, honeydew melon, lees, spice, lightly floral. The wine is taut, yet supple, with just enough acidity to keep it lively. The wine is round and has beautiful balance and finishes long. A pairing favorite is pork loin with apples.

Chevalerie 2020 Bourgueil Diptyque “Franco de Porc”

Coto de Gomariz 2022 Ribeiro Tinto “The Flower and the Bee”

100% Sousón. Blueberries, wild berries, tart cherry, thyme, and barely a whiff of dried leaves. The wine starts out in the mouth with a burst of berry fruit and a backdrop of leaves, then lightens to a grape-y essence. A touch rustic and edgy on the palate, the wine finishes with a tangy bite, and a touch of spice and tannin. Aged in barrel for four months. Pairs nicely with mixed tapas, arroz con pollo, and pork tenderloin. Organic.

Laurent 2022 Petit Verdot "Clandestino"

100% Petit Verdot. Black currants, dark cherries, blueberries, rosemary, and a wee bit of sage. Serious, but not pretentious, the wine is medium-bodied, very well balance and has some ripe tannins to lend structure to a moderately long finish. This is a nice find and surprisingly good for the price. Organic.
