Explorers' Seasonal Value Pack: Summer - Basking In Wine's Reflective Light
Great Wines Don't Have to be Expensive!
This Explorer is a selection of wines to celebrate summer: hot days, warm nights, late colorful sunsets, beach time, and hopefully a vacation, or even a staycation. These packs are meant to offer wines you've never had or wines less frequented! The wines are geared towards summer and early fall, so most are light to medium-bodied, with some good acidity to whet the appetite. These bottles are certainly not exclusively for summer, but they do lend themselves nicely to outdoor dining, sipping on the patio, deck, or around the pool; needless to say they will pair nicely with anything off the grill!
The three white wines and the one rosé and all are light-bodied, with each clocking in at 12.5% alcohol or less. From the north of Portugal there is a Vinho Verde - a light, versatile, sometimes spritzy wine; a Gewurztaminer from Monterey, California that might get you into this polarizing grape; an unoaked Chardonnay from an unusual place, northeastern Italy; and an Austrian rosé from superstar Judith Beck. All fun, all interesting.
The two reds are just as fun and interesting. The first red is probably the most wild of the bunch: an organic, traditionally- and naturally-made Pais from Chile that is funky and has a bit of spritz; and a Cahors Malbec from Fabien Jouves of "You Eff'd My Wine" fame!
This is our 6th Summer pack and as always the wines show a wide range of aromas, flavors, and styles to offer a diversified group for various tastes.
While some folks have had these grapes or wines from these places before, others have not, or maybe these particular bottles are new to you. This is the point of the Explorers' Packs: to try something you haven't had before - whether it is a wine you are completely unfamiliar with or whether the wine is a from a familiar grape or place but perhaps from an unfamiliar wine-maker; these packs aim to offer something different.

Raza 2025 Vinho Verde BrancoA blend of 50% Arinto, 35% Azal, and 15% Trajadura. Mixed citrus and tropical fruits with just a whiff of flowers. There is a slight spritz here and the wine is fruity without being sweet. Simple, easy drinking white wine for when you just need something light and refreshing. Classic summer sipper! Pair with seafood, salads, and finger sandwiches. |

Banyan 2025 Gewürztraminer Monterey County100% Gewürztraminer. Lechee, floral, spicy - everything a classic Gewurz should be, but a lot lighter and dryer than most. The flavors match the aromas and the body is light. There is a tiny bit of residual sugar but tastes nearly dry. Looking for something exotic or a great pairing with Asian cuisine? This fits the bill most wonderfully. |

Verso 2024 Trevenezie IGT Chardonnay “Bestieute”100% Chardonnay. Citrus, apple, toast, and mineral aromas. Crisp and clean, a very pure and beautiful expression of Chardonnay. Medium-minus body, with a refreshing acidity, this is very balanced and charming white. Pair with cream sauce pasta, shrimp, chicken with avocado, and robiolas. Organic. |

Beck, J 2025 Burgenland Rosé “Beck Pink”
Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. Pink grapefruit, raspberry, with a hint of cranberry, and a tiny dash of funk. Bright, zippy, with delicate, but ripe fruit flavors make this a charming and easy to love rosé for the summer. Pairs with assorted cheeses and charcuterie, grilled chicken kabobs, and sausages. Biodynamic farming. Organic.

Cacique Maravilla 2025 Vino Tinto País “Pipeño”100% Pais (Mission). Red crunchy, tangy fruits, floral, savory herbs, and an earthy aroma. Medium-bodied with wild flavors that mirror the aromas that develop into more of the earthy notes, with an almost balsamic finish. There is a touch of spritz that livens the palate. Very easy to drink and will pair with a host of lighter meals such as chicken, pork, salmon, and vegetable based entrees. Organic. |

Fabien Jouves 2024 Cahors Malbec “Jour Fruit”100% Malbec. Deep plum, black cherry, tangy raspberry, and a bit of sous bois. Deeply colored and very fruit-forward Malbec from Cahors. Not tannic and I would almost say chill it, but its character lies somewhere between a soif and a medium bodied red. Excellent concentration of fruit flavors on the palate, and just enough bite on the finish. Goes with grilled selections of all kinds. Organic. |
