Explorers' Seasonal Value Pack: Summer - Sipping On Sunshine

Great Wines Don't Have to be Expensive!

This Explorer is a selection of wines to celebrate summer; hot days, warm nights, late colorful sunsets, beach time, and hopefully a vacation, or even a staycation. These packs ARE meant to be different! The wines are geared towards summer and early fall, so most are light to medium-bodied, with some good acidity to spark the appetite. These bottles are certainly not solely for summer, but they do lend themselves nicely to outdoor dining, sipping on the patio, deck, or around the pool; needless to say they will pair nicely with anything off the grill!

The three white wines are light-bodied, with all of them clocking in at 12.5% alcohol or less. Two are made from single grape varieties, and one is a blend. The blend is from California and is the lightest and the most aromatic of the bunch; the second white is from Bairrada in Portugal and is made from the Maria Gomes grape which produces light, crisp and minerally wines; the third white is from Slovenia and made with a little bit of skin contact from the Ribolla Gialla grape, so, yes, this is technically an “orange” wine, and it will have a bit more texture and complexity than many other white wines. All fun, all interesting.

The three reds are just as interesting. Maybe even more so! The first red is a Pinot Noir from Trentino in northern Italy, and it is probably unlike any other wine made from this grape - lighter than any of the whites in this pack, it is more like a darker rosé; the second red is probably the most controversial and wildest of the bunch: a Malbec blend from Cahors in France that includes an "illegal" grape - the winemaker was not too happy about it and decided to express his thoughts on the label; and finally the third red is made from Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre), a varietal wine from Jumilla in Spain - this is the one full-bodied wine of the pack, because hey, sometimes you need that extra kick.

This is our 5th Summer pack and as always the wines show a wide range of aromas, flavors, and styles to offer a diversified group for various tastes.

While some folks have had these grapes or wines from these places before, others have not, or maybe these particular bottles are new to you. This is the point of the Explorers' Packs: to try something you haven't had before - whether it is a wine you are completely unfamiliar with or whether the wine is a from a familiar grape or place but perhaps from an unfamiliar wine-maker; these packs aim to offer something different.

This Explorers' Pack is discounted just north of 20% off regular prices. No further discounts apply.

Folk Machine 2024 White Light

A blend of 33% Verdelho, 27% Friulano, 17% Vermentino, 13% Albariño, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Very aromatic with peach, citrus, a bit of lime, and a saline, mineral touch. This is a light-bodied and super friendly white for nearly any occasion. Stainless steel fermented and no oak aging - fresh! Organic.

Pato, Luis 2023 Bairrada Vinho Branco Maria Gomes

100% Fernão Pires (Maria Gomes). Pear, lemon, a hint of barely ripe peach, lightly floral, and a whiff of wet stones. This is a juicy and incredibly easy to drink white from Bairrada. A versatile accompaniment with myriad seafood dishes as well as chicken and vegetarian meals. Great with milder cheeses.

Valter Sirk 2021 Rebula (Ribolla Gialla)

100% Ribolla Giala. Tangerine, apple, peach, white blossoms, and toasty lees. Three days of skin contact make this an “orange” wine for beginners. Lightly tannic with nice palate texture to create a long finish. The wine is light-bodied, but has excellent concentration. Pair with more flavorful seafood or poultry. Organic.

Furlani 2023 Vino Rosso “Altopiano Rosso”

Fabien Jouves 2024 VdF “You F&@k My Wine?!”

Malbec, Jurançon Noir, Merlot, and Valdiguié. Red apple, plum, cherry, and a bit of earth. Light and bright red from Cahors; not the usual deep and tannic version from this region. Rustic finish with low volume tannins. Because of the addition or the amount of Jurançon Noir used in this wine, Fabien cannot use the Cahors appellation and must use Vin de France, which, as the label shows, he wan’t that happy about. Organic.

Bodegas Arráez 2021 Jumilla “Vivir Sin Dormir”

100% Monastrell (Mourvèdre). Black and red berries, black pepper, dried fig, meaty, with a ferrous mineral note. Classic aromas of Mourvèdre at this price point make this an even more attractive wine. Full-bodied with palate staining concentration, and a medium-long finish. Four months in French oak. Pair with red meats or a very intense Mediterranean chicken or pork dish. Organic.
