Explorers' Seasonal Value Pack: Summer Splash - A Cool Dive Into White, Red, and Rosé

Great Wines Don't Have to be Expensive!

The Summer Seasonal Value Pack

Summer is the time for outdoor parties in the garden or on the patio, picnics on the beach, or in a Renoiresque meadow, or some alone time in the hammock. Whether it’s crisp whites or lighter reds for al fresco dining, refreshing rosés for sultry evenings, or fuller reds for grilling – the Summer Explorers' Pack is a delightful mix of warm weather appropriate bottles.

I’m fond of all the sampler packs; I put much thought into all of them, and try to choose wines that convey a balanced portrait of the grapes and the regions they are grown and made. With that said, I am particularly thrilled with this collection of wines. Some are brand new to the store, some are new vintages of favorites, and one was just sampled at a store tasting and was overwhelmingly well-received. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed choosing them.

In this pack is a refreshing, light, off-dry Riesling from Germany; a lively Italian white made with Favorita from Piedmont; an unusual white made with Treixadura from Galicia in north west Spain; a light but flavorful rosé from the island of Corsica made from indigenous grapes; a juicy blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional from Portugal; and a California red blend that not only exclusively uses Italian grapes, but almost tastes more like an Italian wine than a Californian wine.

While some folks have had these grapes, or wines from these places before, others have not, or maybe these particular bottles are new to you. This is the point of the Explorers' Packs: to try something you haven't had before - whether it is something you've never heard of, or something from a familiar style or place, but from a wine-maker that is new to you.

This Explorers' Pack is discounted at over 15% off regular prices. No further discounts apply.

Später-Veit 2022 Riesling Feinherb Piesporter Liter (1000ml)

100% Riesling. Apple, peach, a whiff of honey and mineral. An off-dry and scintillating bottle of Riesling that refreshes the palate. Feinherb or “off-dry” is a category that is a little hard to nail down as one producer’s Feinherb could be drier or sweeter than the next, but the gentle sweetness of this wine is braced by the equally gentle acidity. This makes for a perfect little quaffer. Sip by itself, or serve with appetizers, pâté, duck, or one of the most popular cheeses we stock, Challerhocker.

Poderi Cellario 2023 Langhe Favorita “La Frea”

100% Favorita. Honeydew melon, lemon, rosewater, and hay aromas mingle with a stony mineral complexity. Light-bodied but with delightfully persistent flavors. Fausto and Cinzia Cellario are 3rd generation winemakers in the western outskirts of the Langhe. They believe in working with indigenous Piemontese varieties and are fierce defenders of traditional wine making - in the vineyard and in the cellar. Organic.

Coto de Gomariz 2022 Ribeiro Blanco “The Flower and the Bee”

100% Treixadura. Nectarine, orange zest, honeysuckle, lemon, wet stones, and a hint of saline. Juicy with surprising concentration and a zippy finish this single varietal white is very easy to love. Crisp and dry on the extended finish. A perfect go to wine for sipping, apps, seafood, vegetarian dishes, and chicken. Organic.

Petroni 2023 Corse Rosé

Pato, Luis 2022 Bairrada Tinto

A blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional. Raspberry, cherry, smarties, pink flowers, and a bit of earth and saddle leather. Light-bodied, with a tangy and juicy personality, this is an any-day-of-the-week palate pleaser. This is the kind of red that can be enjoyed at room temperature or chilled. Exceptional with firm sheep’s milk cheeses and lighter meals. That being said, a plate of ribs would be a good choice as well.

Giornata 2022 Il Campo Rosso

Predominantly Sangiovese, with Barbera, Montepulciano, and Aglianico. Black cherry, plum, red fruits, violets, dried thyme, and a mineral complexity. Flavors are full, intense, and complex. This is a standout Italian varietal wine made in the USA. Superb balance, smooth texture and a long finish. In a blind tasting this would be hard to pick out as a California wine and that’s a good thing! A fantastic value. Pair with meats, hard Italian cheeses, and portobellos.
